Tomas was born in Pitea, Sweden, on January 23, 1973. He was Detroit's 9th draft choice and 257th overall, in the 1994 Entry Draft. In the 1996-97 preseason, Tomas was tied for first on the club for goals, first in power play goals (PPGs) and second in overall scoring. He scored 2 goals in his Red Wings debut in the preseason on September 15, 1996 against Toronto. Last season in Lulea, Sweden, he was sixth in club tallying by scoring 12 goals and 11 assists in 34 games. He was tied for fifth in playoff scoring with 8 points in 11 games.
